In this study, the authors are concerned with the social structure of the scientific community and how that system operates to determine patterns of scientific behavior. Most of their conclusions are based on observations of the American community of academic physicists. By investigating the stratification system of a well-defined community, which the authors conclude is almost a pure "meritocracy", the Coles shed light on social stratification in general.
