The Indian National Congress has been successful in recruiting new members, winning elections, and avoiding fragmentation. This book aims to explain this success and illuminate the process of party building in newly independent nations. The author conducted a study using an amateur anthropologist and political scientist, interviewing party workers, administrators, villagers, and townsmen, and examining party records and interviews.
