Description:
Asceticism comes from a Greek word meaning training, likening it to an athlete who trains for virtue. In its history, there are two main ideas about asceticism: one focuses on the discipline of the body for a purpose, while the other sees the body as something to be distrusted or negated. Monasticism, deriving from the Greek word for solitude, refers to a religious life where individuals separate themselves from the world and live in solitude.
